Why Humans? Are They Really Worth it?

For a long time I’ve asked God why? Why do you mess with humans? We are the most rebellious, self-centered, arrogant beings ever. Why not just wipe us out, dust off your hands and say, “well, that didn’t go so well, did it.”?
Yet he persists. He lets us live. Even after the screw up with Adam, he provided a way to get us back from satan. Jesus. Jesus stood before God and said, “I’ll pay the cost of their sin so we can have our humans back.”
Still we rebel. Look at the state of the world today. We’re still rebelling. We still hate God and resent Him for trying to tell us what to do.
Why does He still bother? What is it about humans that He expends so much for us? Are we really that special?
Apparently we are. Everything that exists, God spoke into existence. He said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Let there be dry ground, let the earth bring forth plants and beasts and birds and fish. It all just appeared. He spoke the Word and it happened. Stars, planets, trees, microbes—everything that exists—because He spoke. Except humans. He formed Adam. I imagine God getting down on His hands and knees and making a clay man. I know, I know, that’s not the way it actually happened, but He didn’t speak humans into existence. He formed us.
Not only that but He made us in His image. An image is a copy, a representation. Like a reflection in a mirror. Not even our own children are copies or images of us. We’re much more than a copy. We are like God. His image.
I’m not sure what all that entails but it’s pretty grand. Look at God’s creativity in all that He has made. How many different flowers or bugs or mountains or clouds are there? And look at man’s creativity. Not just paintings and music but buildings and highways and clothes and cooking dishes. We are created in the image of God. We can do what He does. We are creators. We come up with things that have never been before.
No other creature is creative. The closest animals have come is to build nests. Most of them have some kind of nest for protection and for their young. But look what humans have done—everything from a tent to a cathedral to a skyscraper.
That’s not the only way we are created in His image. HIs character traits of mercy, compassion, love, self-sacrifice, giving, wisdom, and more. We are created in His image. We are like Him.
That’s why He hasn’t and doesn’t give up on us. Because we are His image and He has big plans for His humans, unlike anything else in creation.
